Armed Forces Covenant legal duty
Under the Armed Forces Act 2021, certain public bodies have had a legal Covenant duty since November 2022 to have due regard to the principles of the Covenant when exercising specified housing, education and healthcare functions.
Local veterans hubs & Armed Forces Champions
Many councils and NHS bodies have an Armed Forces Champion or veterans hub who can unblock housing, health and benefits issues.
Social care assessments
If injury or illness means you need care and support, councils must assess needs under the Care Act (England) and related law in other nations. Service history and carers' needs should be considered.
Veterans in the criminal justice system
If you are in contact with police, courts or prisons, specialist veteran support and liaison can help with mental health, housing on release and resettlement.
Complaints & legal advice
ACAS, Citizens Advice, Law Centres and specialist military charities can help when rights are refused. Judicial review or employment tribunal claims have short deadlines.
Commonwealth & non-UK veterans (high-level)
Immigration and settlement rules for non-UK personnel who served are complex and change over time. Do not rely on rumour — get specialist immigration advice early.
